Contest Day 5: Already?

I can't believe we're 5 days down already. How is everyone doing? Honestly, today is the first day of the five that I have eaten reasonably well. Better late than never, but I don't think I'll lose any weight with 20% adherence to sound weight-loss principles. 

I'm doing my best not to beat myself up for my bad behavior of either the recent or distant past. (See? I listen to my own advice.) However, I'm recognizing the need for better, more consistent effort. Also, I need to eat vegetables once in a while. I have been really bad about that lately.

Unfortunately, contests bring out the inner rebel in me. Grrr...

So, I've been snarfing away at everything in sight. However, I did do some crunches and a few other toning exercises tonight. At least that was something. :)

Maybe I should try exercising too.
Does doing 10 loads of laundry and pushing 3 kids and a cart full of groceries count as exercise?

Seriously, whose wise idea was it to do this contest over the holidays? With all the parties and luncheons, I will count myself a winner if I can just keep from gaining any weight.

This may or may not be reverse psychology to convince my competition that just one more Christmas cookie won't take them off of the leader board.

I know we are supposed to check in every week. Does this involve a weight update?

Yesterday was my first good day on the diet too. The weekend...not so much. I am going to convince myself that this is the real start and I am going to be well balanced from now on!!

I've been really good with exercise but only reasonably well with food. I agree that it's difficult to focus on weight loss during the holidays, but maintaining is 100 times better than gaining!

Something that has helped me get the day off to a good start is making a spinach smoothie every morning for breakfast. I put in about 4 handfuls of spinach, 1/2 a banana, one or two huge handfuls of frozen berries, and some orange juice. You can't even taste the spinach and you're getting at least 4-5 servings of fruits & veggies. It fills me up, gives me lots of energy, and motivates me to eat well the rest of the day. :)

I've been naughty enough this week to easily fall off Santa's good list so I'm in no hurry to check in with my weight, but when are we supposed to check in and how?

Wendi-You realize you're only rebelling against yourself, right? But I understand, too. I don't like being told what to do. Even if I'm the only doing the telling.

Katy-I haven't been able to bring myself to try the core program. Good luck and enjoy your vegetable soup! :)

Rachel R.-Wishful thinking, about the housework/kidwork. If only that stuff (and it is hard) were enough, there would be no fat moms. It's not fair!

Joolee-It was my brilliant idea. You're SO welcome! But you're right--maintaining over the holidays is a very excellent achievement. But in our case, it won't get you any fabulous Egyptian trash (unless you figure out a way to make all the other contestants gain.)

Renee-Good attitude. And hooray for fresh starts. Sometimes, every day is a fresh start for me. Or every hour. Whatever it needs to be, really.

Annie-Mmmm...spinach and fruit--together at last!

Kara-Just make sure to alternate your legs, or you'll have one firm buttock and one flabby.

Brandi-Check-in is on Friday. We'll probably allow slowpokes to weigh in on Saturday morning, too. Also, we're thinking about giving everyone one freebie week, to accommodate those who will be traveling etc. But choose wisely--you only get one weigh-in free week!

We'll just have a thread on Friday where everyone can post their numbers. Those who e-mailed initially are welcome to do that again.

I was doing rather poorly, but yesterday I finally kicked it into gear. I went to my regular spin class and followed it up with yoga. And then I made it to bootcamp this morning.


My gym is having a 12 Days of Classes challenges-- take 12 different types of classes between now and Dec 31. I signed up. So at least I won't be bored.

Trying to keep my eating good. I do really well during the day, but nights are challenging b/c my husband is out of town this week. Somehow making a "real" meal for one, seems like too much of a pain. But I have been making good choices when I go out.

Hmmm, I need to figure out a way to encourage everyone else to gain so I could win by just holding steady...

Go out people and enjoy yourselves - it's the holidays, and you can start fresh on Jan. 1 with the rest of America. One cookie won't hurt. It's okay to eat a plate of brownies, or a bag of m&ms, its normal to gain during the holidays. You don't want to be abnormal do you?? :)

Besides, who really wants egyptian trash?

Sara - I hope you enjoy your trip! I'm jealous you are in a foreign country AND you get a break from the kiddos.

I decided since I only cook for one in the evenings, and I don't usually feel like "cooking" (I leave that to a chick named Wendy who makes old-fashioned hamburgers)I'm trying Sara's kindergarten tactics. I made a 10x10 table in word and decided it is my "100 Days (in a row) of No Fast Food". So far, I have made it through 8 days, and I've had cereal for dinner approximately 6 times. :) Whole grain cereal is better than "whole-lotta grease". Thanks Sara, for the tip!

dc-That gym challenge sounds perfect! Let us know what kinds of classes you take. I struggle too with making meals for just myself. But, we're worth a little effort, aren't we? (answer: yes)

Tif-EVERYONE wants Egyptian trash. So do you.

Katie-That is an excellent goal. And I agree that cereal is MUCH better than fast food. I think sometimes we get caught up trying to go from awful behavior to perfect behavior and forget that there's OK stuff inbetween.
